The Myths and Legends Surrounding Wedding Rings
Wedding rings have been a part of our culture and history for a long time and there are many myths, legends and superstitions surrounding them. When you are planning your wedding, you will hear a lot of these myths and legends as well as advice on what you should and shouldn’t do with your wedding rings.
Here are some of the interesting myths and legends that have been passed down over the years concerning wedding rings.
Dropping the Wedding Ring is Bad Luck
Hold tight to the wedding band, as you really don’t want to let it tumble out of your hands! One of the superstitions that you will hear is that dropping a wedding ring during the service is very bad luck for the person who drops it. However, in some cultures dropping the ring is lucky because it will shake any bad spirits out of it.
Wedding Rings Can Predict the Gender of the Baby
Another myth says that when the newlywed bride becomes pregnant, the wedding ring will be able to predict the gender of the baby. All you need to do is to thread the wedding ring into a piece of strong and dangle is over the stomach of the pregnant wife. If the ring swings around in a circle, she will be having a girl. If the ring swings side to side like a pendulum, the baby will be a boy. Of course, there is no scientific explanation for this but many people believe that it is accurate.
Anything Other than Gold is Bad Luck
In Ireland, it was thought that wearing a wedding ring made from any other metal than gold was extremely bad luck. Gold is a very popular metal for weddings rings, but if you don’t believe in this superstition then you will have many other options available to you such as platinum, titanium, cobalt, silver, palladium and even stainless steel. Alternative metal rings are becoming very popular these days because they are more durable and cheaper than gold.
These are just a few of the strange and fascinating myths and legends that surround wedding rings.
